Fundraising Trip for African Art Therapy Program
Cathy Moon, PCUUC member and Chair of the Art Therapy Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has played an instrumental role in supporting and expanding the work of Global Alliance for Africa.
Global Alliance for Africa is a non-profit organization based in Chicago; Monrovia, Liberia; Nairobi, Kenya; and Arusha, Tanzania. GAA’s mission is to work in partnership with African organizations to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children in Africa.
In the fall of 2011, GAA will introduce its inaugural Art Program Fundraising Trip as a way to help sustain the therapeutic arts program. This annual trip will include visits to some of GAA’s art programs in Kenya or Tanzania, and an introduction to traditional African art and its modern manifestations, and then travel to Ethiopia to tour the ancient stone churches in and around Lalibela.

Ministry Leadership Decisions
Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation (PCUUC) has some important upcoming decisions we will be making as a community. A decision on the direction of ministry at PCUUC is one of those decisions.
On February 20, 2011 Adam Robersmith will be presenting a sermon entitled, “Spinning the Thread, Weaving the Cloth: Ministry and Covenant“
Ministry is done in many ways – but all of them, for Unitarian Universalists, are based in the covenants we make. We are stronger together than we are separately, but we’re strongest when we are all committed to creating one vision for the future, one cloth of all our threads. What are you weaving?
The Rev. Adam Robersmith is the Consulting Ministerial Settlement Representative for the Central Mid-West District and the Consulting Minister at Second Unitarian Church in Chicago, IL.
A discussion and question and answer period will follow the service. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about PCUUC’s various options and some of the pros and cons of those options.
“Islam As a Way of Life” Worship Service & Discussion
January 16, 2011, 9:00 am – 11:15 am
The Byron Colby Barn 1561 Jones Point Road Grayslake, IL 60030
Please join us for this exciting Sunday worship service and “Talk Back” discussion following the service.
Even though Islam is a religion, it is also a way of life. Mr. Farid Fahmy will discuss some of the basic concepts in Islam, such as Tawheed (oneness of God), Islam’s point of view on the theory of original sin (or original goodness) and personal accountability. This will be followed by a discussion of Islam as a way of life, with emphasis on some key aspects of human life and how Islam directs all the details in a Muslim’s life. It is important to note that in Islam one is instructed to worship God through both belief and action. In addition, the actions taken comprise those taken towards God (such as praying, fasting and alms giving) and fellow human beings (such as being good to your neighbor, helping the needy and removing harm from a person’s way). Hence, Islam is a complete way of life. References to the Quran and Hadith will be made throughout the presentation wherever appropriate.
Bio: Farid Fahmy
Mr. Farid Fahmy is an Egyptian-American Muslim, who was born in Egypt and moved to the US after college, where he has spent the past 40 years, mainly between NJ and IL. He is married and has four children, and is a grandfather. Farid graduated with a B.S. degree in Chemistry and Agriculture from Cairo University in 1963. Before retiring a few years ago, he had spent 25 years as Chief Flavorist and Technical Manager for the Flavor Group at Kraft Foods Worldwide. Farid has studied the Quran, Fiqh (Islamic Law) and Hadith (sayings, practices and guidance of Prophet Muhammad) for at least 12 years. Over the past 11 years, he has been very actively involved in our Lake County community through his involvement at Islamic Foundation North (IFN) on its Board of Trustees, on several of its committees, while giving khutbas (or sermons) and teaching classes on Islam. He is a very highly respected leader and learned in Islam.

Want to Share An Announcement With the PCUUC Community?
Announcements during Sunday morning services are reserved for activities and information directly connected to Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation (PCUUC) or the broader Unitarian Universalist (UU) community.
If you have a Sunday morning announcement that either you would like to share or that you would like the service leader to make, please follow the steps outlined in our Announcements Policies and Procedures document.

We have established two mechanisms for the PCUUC community to share information and activities not directly affiliated with our church or our faith.
1) Post your information on the “Our Wider Community” message board at church. This board will be shared with the congregation on Sunday mornings.
2) E-mail your information and we will post it within the PCUUC Voices section of this website. Please e-mail complete and organized information to Membership@PrairieCircleUUC.org, Worship@PrairieCircleUUC.org and Office@PrairieCircleUUC.org
UUSC’s Maxine Neil Visits PCUUC

Duane Shaneyfelt, member of PCUUC's Social Action Committee and Maxine Neil, UUSC’s Director of Institutional Advancement, celebrating PCUUC's 2010 Banner Award. The Banner Award acknowledges congregations committed to supporting the work of the UUSC.
On Sunday, October 24 Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation (PCUUC) was proud to host Maxine Neil of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). The UUSC is a nonsectarian organization that advances human rights and social justice in the United States and around the world. Through a combination of advocacy, education, and partnerships with grassroots organizations, UUSC promotes economic rights, advances environmental justice, defends civil liberties, and preserves the rights of people in times of humanitarian crisis. Maxine Neil is UUSC’s Director of Institutional Advancement, and is responsible for the strategic direction of its fundraising programs.
Maxine had time to touch on only a few of UUSC’s current projects including their work in Pakistan, Haiti and the Gulf region of the United States.
Maxine also mentioned their current partnership with a group at MIT to provide “low-tech” technology solutions to developing areas of the work. One example of a life-changing, low-tech project is the charcoal technology work they are doing with groups in northern Uganda.
