Planning a Church Service

Guidelines for Selecting and Supporting Lay Leaders for Worship

I. Selecting Lay Leaders

Laypersons with a history of public speaking are asked to submit:

  1. Resume
  2. History of public speaking (if not covered in resume)

Proposal for worship service that contains:

  1. Statement of overall theme
  2. Outline of service (if it differs from traditional order of service)
  3. One page summary of sermon
  4. Working bibliography of source material
  5. Plan for visual elements of service (set-up of space, visual symbols, etc.)
  6. Suggestions for music (optional)
  7. Readings for service
  8. Description of any additional liturgical components (special music, dramatic enactment, dance, interactive element, ritual, etc.)

Laypersons without a history of public speaking are asked to:

  1. Have previous experience as a lay reader in church
  2. Submit resume
  3. Submit proposal for worship service that contains elements listed above
  4. Submit sermon to Worship Committee contact person for feedback, and consider any recommended changes
  5. Meet with Worship Committee contact person to practice sermon delivery

II. After Selection of Lay Leader

A contact person from the Worship Committee will be designated to work closely with the lay leader to:

  1. Set date of service
  2. Contact Choir Director and/or musicians to plan music
  3. Write out order of service
  4. Prepare and practice delivery of sermon, as needed
  5. Prepare, or work with others in preparing, visual and other liturgical components of service
  6. Designate a plan for how the liturgical space will be set up and who is responsible for doing this
