PADS - Helping People Out of Homelessness

PCUUC's social action work includes providing assistance to the PADS shelter, which supports the homeless in Lake County.  PADS stands for "Public Action to Deliver Shelter and Supportive Services."  PADS centers located at the following addresses:

914 Eighth Street
Waukeegan, IL

3001 Green Bay Road, Blg #5
VA Complex
North Chicago, IL

How Can You Help?

  • Third Sunday Meals:  Cook or deliver and serve a third Sunday meal at the Center at 914 Eighth Street (working with NSUC on this effort).

  • Make a food bank delivery to the Center.

  • Volunteer as a computer tutor who will help PADS clients learn basic computer skills.

  • Make 42 bag lunches for PADS clients so they have lunches during the week.

  • Provide daytime childcare 3:00 - 5:00 pm, 2-3 times each week, while parents are working.  Help with homework, read, and play games with the children.

  • Provide evening childcare 6:00 - 8:00 pm while clients attend training and group meetings.  Help with homework, read, and play games with the children.

  • Donate bedding, blankets, pillows, lamps, or money for supplies.

How to Volunteer:

If you are willing to volunteer for any of these efforts, please contact Inge Crowley or Janice Simpson, co-chairs of the PCUUC Social Action Committee.  Thank you for your help!

Habitat for Humanity Lake County

Habitat for Humanity Lake County (HFHLC) was formed in 1989 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. To date, more than 100 homes providing permanent housing for over 450 people have been built in Lake County.

PCUUC will be taking part in the Building on Faith program which brings together people representing many different faith communities from across Lake County. One house will be built in the HFHLC Carter Crossing neighborhood in Waukegan near 12th Street and Washington Park. Groundbreaking is scheduled for September 28, 2008 with completion and dedication slated for summer 2009.
