About the event
38 people were killed and at least 537 injured in the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, the worst episode of racial violence in city history. And yet, perhaps shockingly, few have heard about it and fewer still appreciate its impacts. Yet many people are familiar with the fact that the city was and remains deeply segregated. The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19) was founded to educate people about this history and its legacy via public art, historical tours, and more. This presentation will tell the history of 1919, its impacts, and how CRR19 fights historical amnesia to promote racial justice.
Peter Cole is a Professor of History and Distinguished University Professor at Western Illinois University. He founded and co-directs the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project.
